Cover Reveal for New Series: BITTER SPIRITS
Sometimes the best laid plans go awry. My new publisher, Penguin, was all geared up to do a big cover reveal of the first book in my new 1920s paranormal romance series, BITTER SPIRITS (on sale January 7th, 2014). It’s an awesome cover, a stunning cover. And everything was going to happen later this summer…until the cover was accidently uploaded to amazon, where it spread to blogs, pinterest, and goodreads faster than you can say Jack Robinson.
Whoopsie!
Well, our pain is your gain. So if you haven’t seen it already, here’s a peek at the artwork. I’m sure it will have some other things added—blurbs and whatnot, but this is the final concept.
The artwork is by Bay Area artist Aleta Rafton, and I think it’s BEA-U-TI-FUL.
It captures a lot of what’s inside the book: the setting is historic, yet modern; the story is super romantic and sexy; the world is a little bit spooky and paranormal, but not OH MY GOD, A WERE-TURTLE! paranormal (not that there’s anything wrong with were-turtles); and you can see a bit of San Francisco in the background (Golden Gate Bridge, the usual iconic SF image, didn’t exist in 1927, so I was thrilled that Aleta chose another SF iconic landmark that was correct for my time period, the Ferry Building).
Below, you can see that three bloggers at ALL THINGS URBAN FANTASY gave their opinions on the cover today: three thumbs up (woo-hoo!), and it was their unanimous pick for Best Cover of the Week! (check out the full post to see more + some other great covers)
So, what do you think?

Oh, bummer! Sorry the big reveal was spoiled. It’s a GREAT cover, though! It really does capture the book. And it’s sexy. And I love that whole “there’s a big curse in Chinatown…” part. 🙂
I can’t wait to read this and see all the changes! 🙂

Hey, as far as mistakes go, it was a pretty good one. 🙂 I love that tag line, too—Berkley did an awesome job, and my new editor is incredibly nice. The book has changed quite a bit since you read it (for which I can’t thank you enough). *hug*

Love that cover! Just gorgeous. Though I’ll be sad when we say goodbye to Lon, Cady, and Jupe (cannot forget him!); I’m happy to see you’ll have another series for us to dive into. 🙂 Again beautiful cover. Thanks.

Thanks, Jenni! When creating these characters, I approached them in the same way I approached Lon/Cady/Jupe. It’s hard for me to compare characters because I wrote them all, and they’re starring in different genres. But I can say with all honesty that I like these new characters equally as much, if not MORE than the characters in Arcadia Bell. *gasp*

So sorry that happened! The cover is beautiful. Love the font and love the Ferry Bldg tower. Can’t wait for this one to release.

Worse things could’ve happened—at least the cover was finished, LOL! Anyway, I’m really glad you like it, Lee! 😀

Yeah, yeah, yeah cute cover …
What about the were-turtles? Very keen on them and I can already see them as some kind of special ops group!

Humans by day, but at night they shift into Teenage Mutant Ninja turtles who slay their Were-Rat enemies! The leader is a girl with daddy issues who’s secretly in lust with her sexy second-in-command. They may be slow, but when the going gets tough…well, they just retreat into their shells, but still.
